Silvia News chart: step line of the fixed rate on new Series I savings bonds, set each May and November from September 1998 to November 2026, rising to 1.40% on Nov. 1, 2026, the highest since November 2006

The I bond rate for November 2026 is 5.51% for Series I savings bonds issued from Nov. 1, 2026, through April 30, 2027, the Treasury said. The rate includes a 1.40% fixed rate, the highest since November 2006, and is up from 4.26% for bonds issued in the prior six months.

How is the November 2026 I bond rate calculated?

An I bond's rate, called the composite rate, has two parts. The fixed rate stays with the bond for life. The inflation rate resets every six months. Treasury announces both each May 1 and Nov. 1.

The new semiannual inflation rate is 2.04%, up from 1.67% in May. Treasury's formula adds the fixed rate, twice the inflation rate, and the fixed rate times the inflation rate. For new bonds, that comes to 5.51%.

The 1.40% fixed rate is up from 0.90% for bonds issued from May through October 2026. Treasury last set a fixed rate that high on Nov. 1, 2006.

What will older I bonds earn?

The 2.04% inflation rate applies to all I bonds for six months, starting on each bond's next rate change date. That date comes every six months from the month the bond was issued. Each bond keeps its own fixed rate.

  • A bond with a 0.90% fixed rate would earn 5.00%.

  • A bond with no fixed rate would earn 4.08%.

Each Social Security or employer ID number can buy up to $10,000 in electronic I bonds per calendar year, starting at $25. A bond can be cashed after 12 months, but cashing it before 5 years costs the last 3 months of interest.
